WipWare held their 6th WipWare Conference & Workshop from November 5-7th in Toronto. Many of our resellers and partners were in attendance. The 3-day conference and workshop involved presentations to help our partners and resellers view our new product line, get in-depth product information, and experience hands-on demonstrations of WipWare technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event kicked off with a WipFrag<\/a><\/strong> presentation, including information on licenses, drones (UAV), the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Human Machine Interface (HMI). WipWare's Momentum System was also presented including the Conveyor camera type and the improved Vehicle Camera Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a great day of presentations, everyone enjoyed dinner at Nando's and some Go-Kart Racing at Formula Kartways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The end of the second day had another team building special event - Escape Rooms. Fun was had by all and some good laughs along the way with dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final day allowed all participants to do an analysis of the conference and workshop and enjoy dinner at the CN Tower Restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 5, 2017, WipWare co-founder and President Tom C. Palangio was inducted into the Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Service Association (SAMSSA) Hall of Fame<\/a><\/strong> in recognition of his contributions to mining technology, innovation, and the mining supply and services sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award was presented at Dynamic Earth in Sudbury during SAMSSA's Annual General Meeting. The occasion also marked Palangio's retirement as SAMSSA President after 15 years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony, his son Thomas W. Palangio, WipWare's Chief Technical Officer, delivered a tribute recounting his father's career, entrepreneurial journey, and contributions to fragmentation measurement technology. The full speech is available here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAMSSA has evolved since 2017 to become MineConnect<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Humble Beginnings Come Great Things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The induction ceremony also provided an opportunity to reflect on Palangio's career, from his early interest in engineering and explosives to his role in developing practical fragmentation measurement technology. His son, Thomas, recounted that journey in a tribute delivered during the ceremony, highlighting the personal and professional experiences behind his father's contributions to the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom's story began when a couple of Italian immigrants, Vincenzo Palangio and Teresina Mastropietro, chose to call Northern Ontario home. Their children, including Tom's father, in turn relocated throughout the region and set down roots of their own. In 1965, Tom moved to the Ottawa area and dabbled with electrical and mechanical engineering. While there, he met and married his wife, Phyllis. Eventually, he completed his education in architectural design and returned to Northern Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When an opportunity arose with Dupont, he accepted and so began his love affair with explosives. After 27 years with Dupont, later ETI, he became the Technical Specialist. He quickly realized measuring rock blasting outcomes might be a lucrative niche in the mining industry. So, in 1986, Tom Palangio, in collaboration with John Franklin and Norbert Maerz, created the Waterloo Image Enhancement Process, or WIEP.  John and Norbert worked in Waterloo\u2019s Earth and Computer Sciences divisions. Recognizing the importance and sales potential of their discovery, the trio founded WipWare to further develop and market the technology internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Has Taken Some Leaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prior to Tom's induction into the SAMSSA Hall of Fame, Hugh Kruzel wrote a featured article<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on October 17, 2017. In this article, Hugh speaks with Tom about the leaps Tom has taken as an entrepreneur and innovator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Hugh asked Tom about his childhood, Tom explained how he liked to build things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was always drawn to art, mechanical, electrical and scientific topics at a time when space was in the news. I\u2019m a real boomer. I liked to build things and take them apart and was resourceful but never thought I'd earn a living playing with the stuff that interested me. Leonardo da Vinci would be my history hero. My teachers said I was \"disruptive\" and it took me many years to realize that\u2019s a good thing. \u2014<\/strong><\/em> Tom Palangio<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Image Analysis Technology - Mining Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1995, Tom started Topex Inc - his own explosives consulting firm. Later, he incorporated WipWare to commercially market and sell image analysis technology<\/a><\/strong> that improves blast fragmentation results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The explosives business was \"booming\" and I worked in Peru, Chile, South Africa, Australia and Hong Kong in the next few years providing training, troubleshooting, blast designs, vibration control, high speed camera work and other specialized services.<\/em> \u2014<\/strong><\/em> Tom Palangio<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

One thing Tom has always believed in is mentoring newcomers to the world of business, because this creates new jobs, and Tom tries to participate in organizations that support this. After 15 years as President of SAMSSA, Tom decided to retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time of his induction in 2017, Palangio had accumulated more than 40 years of experience in mining and explosives. His previous recognition included the NOBA Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2003, export development awards in 2001 and 2002, the OACETT Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 2009, and the Northern Ontario Business Award for Innovation in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a dusty DOS computer to intelligent, automated fragmentation analysis systems, WipWare has come a long way. For more than three decades, we've helped transform how industries measure and understand the materials they work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, we celebrated 30 years of WipWare. But our story began even earlier, with a pioneering idea in 1986 that would help change the way the mining industry evaluates rock fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mark this milestone, we're looking back at the people, innovations, and moments that shaped our journey. It's a story of practical problem-solving, bold ideas, and a lot of hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beginning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before WipWare was WipWare, our founder, Tom Palangio<\/strong><\/a>, was working in the field with North Bay DuPont, tackling real-world blasting challenges with innovative thinking and a practical mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of those challenges would lead to something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, evaluating blast fragmentation depended heavily on experience and visual judgment. Engineers could describe a blast as good, fair, or poor, but consistently quantifying the results was another matter entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom recognized that better measurements could help engineers understand what was happening, compare results, and improve future blasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solving a Global Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For generations, mining and quarrying operations relied on visual assessments or labour-intensive physical sampling to evaluate blast fragmentation. Collecting, screening, and weighing large quantities of rock was often too costly and impractical for routine use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if we could measure fragmentation automatically, using photographs instead?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1986, a groundbreaking collaboration involving Franklin Geotechnical, DuPont\/ETI, and the University of Waterloo helped turn that idea into reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result was WipFrag, a pioneering digital image-analysis technology for measuring rock fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By applying advances in imaging and computer processing, the original researchers developed a way to analyze photographs and video frames of blasted rock and produce quantitative particle size distributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technology grew from the Waterloo Image Enhancement Process (WIEP), later becoming known as WipFrag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Palangio, together with Dr. Norbert Maerz, Dr. John Franklin, and the other researchers and developers involved, helped lay the groundwork for technologies that would eventually make automated material measurement possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as an ambitious research effort would grow into something used by operations around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Trials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, innovative technology needs to prove itself outside the laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the late 1980s and 1990s, WipFrag underwent practical testing at mining operations including INCO's Copper Cliff and Coleman underground mines and Highland Valley Copper in British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These early applications helped demonstrate the value of measuring fragmentation rather than relying on visual assessments alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reported outcomes included a 40% expansion in blast patterns and a 10% increase in mill throughput, providing compelling examples of how quantitative fragmentation data could support operational improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the technology looked a little different back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those early systems ran on DOS computers, long before smartphones, cloud services, or modern automated image processing became part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We owe a great deal to the visionaries who asked whether fragmentation could be measured digitally\u2014and then put in the work to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hats off to the original developers, researchers, and early adopters whose dedication helped establish the foundation on which WipWare continues to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WipJoint and the First Automated Systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next chapter wasn't just about improving WipFrag. It was about expanding what could be measured and how that information could be collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1990, WipJoint was introduced to help characterize rock structure, including apparent joint orientation and in-situ block size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1998, our journey into automated, real-time fragmentation monitoring was underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That year, Thomas W. Palangio, the founder's son, joined the company and helped lead the development of WipWare's first dedicated hardware systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

System 1<\/strong>, introduced in 1998, used a single camera for online fragmentation analysis. Just one year later, System 2<\/strong> expanded that capability to support as many as 12 cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2000, WipFrag 2 continued the evolution of our original software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These developments marked an important transition: fragmentation measurement was moving beyond individual photographs and into ongoing industrial monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we were just getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beginning of Solo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of our favourite photographs from the archives shows WipWare team members gathered around the first Solo system in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally developed for conveyor monitoring and later adapted for vehicle-load applications, this early system helped establish the foundation for what would eventually become today's Solo<\/strong><\/a> and Reflex<\/strong><\/a> technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two familiar faces in that photograph remain central to WipWare's technical development today: Thomas Palangio<\/strong><\/a>, now our Chief Technical Officer and Vice President, and Kevin DeVuono<\/strong><\/a>, our Head Programmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's a reminder that behind every new generation of technology are the people whose knowledge, persistence, and creativity make it possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WipFrag Goes Mobile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As our automated systems continued to evolve, so did the original WipFrag software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, WipFrag 3 introduced new capabilities for UAV and GIS applications, extending fragmentation analysis beyond conventional ground-level photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in 2016, WipFrag came to mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, field personnel could capture and analyze fragmentation images directly using a phone or tablet, making the technology more accessible wherever measurements were needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ability to collect, process, and share results using familiar devices was another major step toward faster and more flexible fragmentation assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From desktop computers to the palm of your hand, WipFrag continued to evolve with the needs of the people using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Pit to Plant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By this point, WipWare's technologies were doing much more than measuring blasted rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automated systems were helping operations monitor material on conveyors and in vehicle loads, making it possible to evaluate fragmentation at different stages of mining and processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, WipWare founder and President Tom Palangio sat down with Jerrod Downey of The Crownsmen Partners<\/strong><\/a> at CIM in Vancouver to discuss that evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their conversation explored WipWare's beginnings, the challenges of introducing disruptive technologies to the mining industry, and the importance of getting useful measurement data into the hands of people who can act on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WipFrag 4 and a New Generation of Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, WipFrag 4 marked another major step in the software's development, building on decades of experience in fragmentation measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As computing technology advanced, so did the tools available for identifying particles, analyzing images, and interpreting material characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deep Learning edge detection became another important development in WipFrag's evolution, improving the ways users could identify particles and prepare images for analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the technical direction of Thomas Palangio, WipWare continued advancing its software and automated systems, combining practical field experience with modern imaging, computing, and industrial communication technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a garage in Bonfield, Ontario, to installations around the world, WipWare had grown into an international provider of specialized material measurement technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, our technologies support measurements of particle size, shape, volume, and colour across field, laboratory, conveyor, and vehicle-load applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WipWare hosted its sold-out fifth annual Training Seminar from September 16\u201319, 2014, at the Canadian Ecology Centre<\/strong><\/a> in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park<\/strong><\/a> near North Bay, Ontario. Under the theme \"Pit-to-Plant,\" the event brought together mining professionals from Canada and seven other countries to explore the relationship between blasting, fragmentation measurement, mineral processing, and operational optimization. The seminar drew positive reviews from attendees from Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, UK, Brazil, Chile and the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year's seminar featured prominent speakers highlighting the importance of fragmentation data on both the blasting and processing end of operations in addition to WipWare technical staff outlining software features and automated system maintenance. Guest speakers covered a range of topics starting with an in-depth look at various blasting parameters and some exceptions to the Kuz-Ram model by the renowned Dr. Calvin J. Konya, President of Precision Blasting Services and Director of the Academy for Blasting and Explosives Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Adrian Dance, principal metallurgy consultant at SRK Consulting (Canada) Inc.<\/strong><\/a> and a leading authority on Mine-to-Mill optimization outlined the justification for increasing drill and blast costs to achieve better fragmentation in terms of cost savings downstream in the milling operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francois Robichaud, metallurgical superintendent at Agnico-Eagle described his experiences using image-based bulk material particle-size-analyzers to evaluate crusher performance and monitor SAG mill feed leading to optimized particle sizes entering their SAG mill resulting in higher throughput and reduced energy costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seminar participants also received hands-on training with WipWare's WipFrag<\/a><\/strong> and Delta software packages, and instruction on installation, use and maintenance of the company's Momentum,
